  • Sustainable Activewear: A Journey to Change the Industry

    November 28, 2024 3 min read

When we started our journey into creating activewear, we didn’t know the full extent of the environmental and human costs tied to the clothing industry. Activewear, in particular, is dominated by synthetic fibers, toxic dyes, and mass-production methods that exploit both people and the planet. The deeper we looked, the clearer it became that we needed to do things differently.

Our mission wasn’t just about making sustainable clothing—it was about creating a movement, one that blends traditional craftsmanship with modern technology to redefine how activewear is made.

    The Problem with Synthetic Activewear

Most activewear today is made from synthetic materials like polyester, nylon, and spandex. These materials are derived from petrochemical processes, which are not only energy-intensive but also create fabrics that shed microplastics every time they are washed. These microplastics end up in rivers, oceans, and even our drinking water, causing long-term harm to marine ecosystems and human health.

The dyes used to color synthetic activewear are another issue. Chemical dyes pollute water sources, leaving behind toxic sludge that’s supposed to be stored safely but often isn’t. During our visit to India, we saw fields turned into wastelands by chemical dyeing units. These areas are littered with industrial waste, harming communities and the environment.

The impact doesn’t stop at pollution. Behind the scenes of fast fashion are exploited workers, often subjected to low wages and unsafe conditions. These hidden costs of cheap activewear are born by real people, making the industry unsustainable on every level.

    Sustainable Materials for Activewear

We knew from the beginning that we couldn’t rely on synthetic fibers. Instead, we chose materials that are renewable, biodegradable, and eco-friendly. Our fabrics are made from wood pulp, sourced from sustainably managed forests. These fibers provide the softness, breathability, and durability you expect from activewear, without the environmental toll of plastics.

Our stitching also reflects this commitment. Instead of polyester threads, we use biodegradable alternatives like Tencel™ Lyocell. Every detail, down to the prints on our clothing, is designed to be as natural as possible. For example, the dark gray tones in our shirts come from pomegranate rinds, a byproduct of juice production, creating rich, natural hues without toxic dyes.

    The Power of Natural Dyeing

Dyeing was one of the biggest challenges we faced. Chemical dyeing is one of the most polluting processes in the fashion industry, consuming vast amounts of water and leaving it too toxic to reuse.

We partnered with Rajan, an expert in natural dyeing based in Tiruppur, India, to explore alternatives. Natural dyes, made from ingredients like indigo leaves, onion peels, and bark, eliminate toxic waste. The water used in this process can be recycled or used for irrigation, and the byproducts enrich the soil instead of polluting it.

This isn’t just sustainable—it’s a return to craftsmanship. For thousands of years, natural dyes were the standard before the rise of synthetic alternatives. Reviving this tradition not only benefits the environment but also supports local farmers and artisans.

    Making Activewear That Lasts

Sustainability doesn’t stop at materials—it’s also about longevity. We designed our activewear to be durable, ensuring that every piece performs well and lasts for years. By investing in high-quality stitching, stretchable natural fibers, and timeless designs, we’ve created clothing that stands up to your most demanding workouts without compromising on sustainability.

Honoring People, The Planet, and Culture

This journey has been about more than creating sustainable clothing. It’s been about reconnecting with traditions, supporting ethical practices, and ensuring that every step of the process respects people and the planet.

By partnering directly with artisans like Rajan and sourcing raw materials responsibly, we’ve created a supply chain that empowers local communities. Farmers who grow dye plants like indigo benefit from crop rotation, which improves soil health and provides additional income. Artisans reviving traditional dyeing techniques are paid fairly for their expertise, preserving skills that have been passed down for generations.

Join the Movement for Sustainable Activewear

It took nearly two years of research, testing, and development to bring our collection, Naturally Active by Movement Made, to life. Every piece represents our commitment to sustainability, innovation, and craftsmanship.

When you choose sustainable activewear, you’re not just investing in clothing—you’re supporting a movement that values transparency, tradition, and the environment. Together, we can create a future where fashion respects the planet and the people who make it.
